The Past

“Did you see that,” said Alex pointing to the top stage of their gym.

“C’mon Alex you don’t really believe the rumors. I mean they are years old,” Jasmine replied sarcastically.

“Ladies, get moving,” their Phy Ed instructor had said to them.

“Hey Alex,” Jasmine said out of breath.

            “Yeah?”

“You read too much ghost stories.”

            “So do you.”

“Yeah but I’m not the one seeing shadows and believing old rumors now am I?”

“Just you wait. I bet it’s a ghost or something and you’ll believe me when it drowns you in the locker room just like in the second cheerleaders’ book when Bobbi dies,” Alex went on.

“Oh please Alex. You just proved my point. But anyhow that really was a pretty good book compared it was about cheerleaders.”

After a close game of volley ball they went to change then headed to choir.

“Jasmine, I mean it. There was a shadow up on the top stage.”

“Yeah Alex, just like there’s a purple dinosaur and an ogre named Shrek.”

“That’s all kid stuff.”

“Fine lets ask the guys at noon hour and see what they know about your rumors and myths,” Jasmine said almost walking into the door.

The girls went through choir singing Latin and French songs.

“I can’t wait to get to lunch,” said Jasmine.

“That’s not fair. They will side with you and you know it.”

“I just want to see what they have to say that’s all.”

They went to their Geography class and sat in the back of the classroom.

“Lets work on our newspaper article, its due Friday.”

“Yeah Jasmine todays Monday besides it not due until the end of the month.”

“So I can still get started, besides it’s almost lunch hour. We just have to endure Geography. Hurry up and finish your notes.”

The two girls hurried out the door to get to their lockers so they could meet up with some of their other friends. As they entered the gym where they mess around until homeroom, Alex pointed excitedly and showed Jasmine where she has seen the figure.

“See. Its right there and I think it’s looking right at us,” said Alex.

Sure enough, Jasmine saw it as well. “It’s most likely a mat the wrestlers use for practice,” she said unsure.

Alex reached for volleyball and when they came to where the guys were playing basketball Jasmine yelled out, “Bryant! Dominique! Do either of you two know anything about Stine Highs myths and legends about ghosts?”

“Are you two still working on that newspaper article,” said Dominique.

“Well yeah sort of I guess but I was wondering just out of curiosity,” replied Jasmine.

“Have you heard of the Friday Ghosts,” Bryant said answering her question.

“We mean real ghosts and spirits Bryant not some crazy hoax,” Alex said.

“You’re serious. You really have never heard of them,” Bryant said astonished.

“You’re saying there really are ghosts,” asked Alex with hope.

“Yeah,” Dominique and Bryant replied together.

“Okay so what do you know about it than,” asked Jasmine.

“Don’t you mean them,” said Alex.

“Yeah whatever, just what’s the story behind the two kids?”

“Well no one knows their names but they were freshmen when they attended the school in 1913, when the school first opened.”

“Okay how do I know you are telling the truth, Bryant? How could you two of all people know all that,” asked Jasmine.

“Library,” the two freshmen guys said together.

“Since when do either of you go to the library let alone look up apparitions, ghosts, and spirits. I thought only Alex and I did that.”

“We were looking for something for Science when we found a book on it,” uttered Dominique.

“Bryant you’re in our Science class and we are not looking up anything.”

“Well Dominique has to so I went with him.”

“Yeah well there is no book in the library about Stine’s past anyhow. Trust us we’ve looked,” Alex told them.

“Go to Gizmo, he is the one who told us,” Bryant said.

“What could Gizmo possibly know? Besides why would I ask him anything? He is a hacker who annoys the heck out of me,” said Jasmine.

“Yes that may be but he is a hacker that can get into the schools main system. But that’s all we know because teacher almost caught us,” said Bryant.

“When aren’t you guys in trouble?”

“Umm…,” they both uttered.

“Anyway thanks. I suppose I can ask Gizmo one small favor,” Jasmine said, “it’s not like it can hurt us any.”

During their homeroom they went to the computer room and met up with Gizmo.

“Hey Gizmo,” said Alex walking into the room.

“Hey what,” was his reply.

“Can you do us a small favor?”

“Depends. What and why.”

“Not much just get us into the school’s main server and tell us everything you know about the school’s past from the day it was built,” said Jasmine, “nothing much though.”

“Are you guys still working on that dumb newspaper article,” he asked.

“It isn’t for our dumb article and we just want to know.”

“Okay I’m in, now what’s in it for me Jasmine?”

“Two packs of gum.”

“Okay fine. Let’s see…it was built in 1912 and opened a year later. Two boys’ names unknown died that year while attending as freshmen. Death is also unknown except it happened in 1913 at Stine High School on Friday the thirteenth. Rumor has it though that every thirteen years someone dies and, according to the files that rumor is a true one. The two boys died in 1913 and thirteen years later a freshmen girl died. Then in 1939 is happened again and in 1952, 1965, 1978, and 1991. It stops there because this is the thirteenth year, 2004. Also here’s something weird, every freshmen was thirteen years old.”

“Thanks Gizmo. You better log off, the bell is going to ring,” said Jasmine.

“I wonder what them two are up to,” Dominique said to Bryant.

“Who knows what goes though their minds and I’m not sure I want to know,” Bryant replied.

Alex, Jasmine, and Bryant headed to woods class while Dominique went to health. On their way the two girls talked constantly. “That would be weird and kind of scary if it was a true rumor. I mean Gizmo has the facts to back up the theory,” Alex went on.

“Hey Alex, who are them two guys over there?”

“I don’t know, I haven’t seen them before.”

“Oh well who cares. Its cold out here lets hurry. Why did they decide to put shop classes in another building,” complained Jasmine.

When they arrived inside the instructor yelled out,” Listen up. We have two new students in the class, Ryan and Ethan. I’m going to need your help because I can’t be everywhere at once.”

“Man Alex these guys give me the creeps. Wonder where they are from they look like brothers.”

“They most likely are. Anyhow let’s get to work,” replied Alex.

Alex and Jasmine were helping another freshmen boy named Antonio sand his clock face and boards on the belt sander when they heard him scream. They walked away to get their boards and they rushed back over to him and saw his hands under the guard. They tried and tried to shut it off. Emergency brake wouldn’t work neither did turning off the entire machine its self. Rayne, the instructor, didn’t hear because he ran to get something in the auto shop next door.

“Shut it off! Shut it off! Help me,” cried Antonio.

“Why won’t it shut off,” yelled Jasmine, “don’t stand there someone get Rayne now!”

As soon as Rayne came back to the woods shop the machine shut off and they carefully removed Antonio’s hands. All that remained from the wrist down was raw flesh, jagged bone, and blood gushing everywhere. Only two fingers were left on his right hand. On the left it was only bone left, no fingers remained. Rayne immediately dismissed class and brought him to the emergency room himself.
